Speed Test: How to Measure Your Average Cross Stitch Rate and Why

September 25, 2020October 16, 2023 Siri0Tagged Cross stitch, Resource

This is probably going to be a long post, so let’s start this off by immediately saying this is NOT about whether you are fast or slow. None of that matters. You should not compare yourself to others and/or get upset at yourself for stitching slower due to injury, mental health, multitasking, etc. That’s not […]

If you’ve been around the cross stitch or embroidery community for a while, you’ve probably come across the term ORT. But what are ORTs and why do people keep them around? According to the dictionary an ort is “a scrap or remainder of food from a meal.” ; so in stitching terms it’s the scrap […]

Seeing them laid out like this I almost wish there was more of the yellow/pink in the final pattern. 👀 You'll have to wait and see what I'm planning though. Any guesses?

Grand total of 22 hours cross stitched in May. I b Grand total of 22 hours cross stitched in May.
I blame the unexpected gallbladder surgery for this particular dip in productivity, though still more stitched than April!

I did however move the shelf I normally use for these photos, and also forgot to put in scissors for scale. But here we are. Just doing my best.
A look back at one of my favorite biscornu to date A look back at one of my favorite biscornu to date. And it's not even cross stitch! I made this adorable tiny biscornu with English Paper Piecing using 1/2 inch hexies! It's super cute, double sided, and hasn't left my desk since I made it! I just love it so much.
I'm a sucker for anything rainbow though. Which is great, because we're almost into Pride month!

I keep meaning to make more of these. Will this year be the year? 🤔🥰

Beads, cording, tassels, fun buttons, ribbons, you name it. So here's a question -- what's YOUR favorite way to embellish a biscornu? Any extra special tips on the types of crafty extras you can use to pretty up a biscornu?

Today I wanted to show you a little behind the sce Today I wanted to show you a little behind the scenes on how I take my product photos.
You've probably seen this workbench in my other behind the scenes posts, but here it is in action!

These backgrounds from @clubbackdrops are the perfect width for this workbench so it's not poking off the front and getting bent by me walking around in front of the bench. They're not quite long enough for the full table, but I don't need them to be! that side is a little landing area for extra props and things while I work. This particular one didn't make the final shot very much, but it's important to have a good background to start with.

And then because my office is in the basement and I'm a night owl... lighting! The workbench itself has a light and I added an LED strip along the side for even more light. But also I've been using this nail lamp for nice even lighting closer up to whatever I'm photographing. I put this one in my Amazon Storefront if you're interested, as I've found also good lighting to stitch by at my desk. But mostly I use it for photos! Sometimes I'll set up an extra ring light to the right of the bench if needed, but it isn't usually.

I have my camera mounted to the wall with an adjustable arm so that I can raise, lower, and extend it on a whim and it holds it in place well so I can position it then use a camera remote so it can take a nice clear photo without me accidentally moving it.

There's a PC just below this workbench so you can kinda see the usb cable draped over that arm so I can plug it right in and retrieve the photos without having to take it off its mount.

And then of course my collection of faux flowers that somehow manage to sneak into every photo I post. 😂 This bench is great at holding both extra materials and random photography props.

Y'all got any good tips for taking photos of your cross stitches? My favorite tip is using a blacklight flashlight for capturing glow in the dark thread. ;)

This nice setup won't, however, stop you from not noticing a stray strand of faux wheat sneaking into frame. whoops.
